A Good Decision

I will write more about trees in a few days, but, I did want to say that my decision to remove the sweet gum tree was certainly the right one.  When they started removing the main trunk, it was obvious that it was rotting on the inside.  It was only a matter of time before Mother Nature removed it for me.

No sooner had my crew left than another one showed up at a neighbor's home to remove a large tree.  Of course, we still have two idiots on the block who have had trees actually come down and they haven't removed them.  One has been laying on the back of the house for a few weeks now.  What is wrong with people?

  1. People are lazy or they don't have the money or they can't physically do it. I'm glad your tree did come down now knowing how bad it was Inside. I bet you feel better about it too.

  2. It always feels good when you feel you've made a good decision.

We have new neighbors that lost a very large heavy branch during some heavy wind. For a week, that branch was in the street - finally my husband hauled the branch to their side - this was 2 months ago and that branch is still there. Doesn't make me feel too optimistic about these new neighbors.

    1. Well, my relatively new neighbor has had a huge branch from a tree since June in her backyard. She had nerve enough to ask the guys clearing my trees to take it away for free. They said 'no'. Good for them. The branch is over six feet high and covers most of her yard.

  3. Perfect timing it seems. That's a job I could never do!

  4. You handled the tree's end of life well. Nature makes all lives temporary.
When I was a teenager, I was watching afternoon reruns when the thud of all time overhead interrupted my escapism. One of our yard's tall trees had fallen on our house. We called the police, who going above and beyond helped us clear it off the roof. Then we had the 40-foot long once proud truck sawed up and removed. Within days we had to have the roof repaired as leaks appeared.
So paying attention to the signs that a tree needs to be brought down is the smart thing to do.

  5. By the way, my retirement began two days ago, so your blog is more relatable to me now.

    1. Enjoy your retirement. I am certainly enjoying mine - except for the tree issues, lol.

    2. :) I'll be moving into a place that has been converted into various kids of senior apartments. It's a huge tree covered stretch that was an orphanage going back to the 1870s. So if one of those big trees falls, it's the grounds crew's issue, not mine (unless it hits me squarely on the noggin!)
