Christmas Eggnog

Do you like eggnog?  I think it must be an acquired taste.  I used to love it and make it, but then I discovered that I was the only one drinking it.

I was just getting out my recipes for the holidays and wanted to make sure I did not forget something at the grocers.  In doing so, I saw my old recipe from 1972.  This recipe was actually given to me by a co-worker at the old City of Detroit hospital.  If you are not afraid to eat raw eggs or can find pasteurized ones, and you like eggnog, you might enjoy this recipe.

Christmas Eggnog

Ingredients:

3 large eggs, separated

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 cup brandy

1/2 cup rum

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

Nutmeg

Preparation:

Beat three egg yolks until light in color.  Gradually add the sugar and beat until very light and pale in color.  Chill.

Into chilled egg mixture, beat brandy, rum and milk.

Lightly whip heavy cream.  Using a wire whisk, carefully beat into egg mixture.

Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into mixture.

Serve in punch cups topped with grated nutmeg.

Wow, now I think I know why I enjoyed this so much and I am not much of an alcohol drinker, but I recall the flavors as being wonderful.

Let me know if you decide to make this.

  1. This sounds yummy except for the brandy of which I haf a bad experience when young and stupid. I may give this a shot!

  2. My husband made eggnog years ago, when we owned chickens and before it became a bit dangerous to drink raw eggs. Nowadays, we are fortunate to have an eggnog out of Ithaca, New York that is almost like homemade. Our local grocery carries it. It doesn't have nutmeg, either. I find almost all commercial eggnogs way overload on nutmeg. I can no longer drink as alcohol (believe it or not) irritates my bladder big time, so I would also have to leave the potent potables out, alas. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. Nutmeg is quite pungent so it should be used sparingly. The last time I bought commercial eggnog I was not happy with it.

  3. Thanks for reminding me about eggnog, I'd forgotten all about it. Guess what my visitors will be given when they arrive over the festive season - eggnog!

  4. I’ve scarcely ever tried egg nog. If I recall correctly I didn’t care too much for it, but it is a classic of the season, so I appreciate the recipe. Btw, I’m having a Christmas/birthday get together tomorrow with a friend (her birthday is Dec. 21), and I’ll show her your blog. Why do I think she’ll like it? Her name is Virginia!

    1. As you know, this was originally Yes Virginia, There is Life after Retirement. Then I got tired of folks calling me Virginia or had no idea where the phrase originally came from. So, I shortened the title. It is the season, though, and our local paper runs the original Christmas letter from Virginia every year.

  5. Years ago I made my own... but now we buy it... we make coffee lattes with it... don’t usually add whiskey...
