I have spent all night on the train from Madrid, Spain to Lisbon, Portugal. We nearly froze and I am convinced I have pneumonia. Arriving in Lisbon we check into a very nice room in the Hotel Lis at 180 Avenue de Liberdade. From what I could discover online, it appears this is now a shopping mall.
Our sightseeing for today include the Tower of Belem dating to the 16th century. It is another UNESCO World Heritage site.

I do remember having a picture of myself in front of this tower, one of the few photos I was actually seen in.
Our other visit is to the Monument to the Discoveries.

We were very impressed by our first day in the city. I spent $2.38. I'm beginning to think we must have been begging for food on the streets, lol.
Comparatively, I wonder how much someone would spend per day doing the trip you did then these days. Probably 100% more!

Airfare alone would be over $1,000 and I only took $1,500 in spending money. Can't imagine the cost with some of the same hotels now over $300 a night.
DeleteOops. Make that $1200 in spending money.
DeleteAs they say: been there, done that. I've written no diary on my trips. I've only saved photos, tickets, maps and leaflets. I had a small, basic Kodac camera, and little money.
ReplyDeleteWe had small cameras and took slides because it was much cheaper than prints at the time.
DeleteThat monument is incredible! Another delightful day Denise.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Keith's Ramblings!
Never stopped in Lisbon but drove straight to the Algarve. I thoroughly enjoyed Portugal and would love to go back.
ReplyDeleteThat second picture is kind of different! Love the old tower, though. What was it used for?
ReplyDeleteIt is a 16th century defense fortification.
DeleteI've heard that Portugal is cheaper than Spain and other European countries. Still, you sure did well with only $2 and change! What you said about being in few travel pictures resonates. I'd rather have images of the actual sites, without selfies or other people cluttering them up. So much fascinating history!
ReplyDeleteyou did spend very little and I bet you didn't eat as healthy as you do now. Knowing how I am I would have missed lunch to see more sights. Love the old building and the monument is something to see.
