After the Winter of 2018

It was a rough winter.  And now spring seems to be finally here.  I do not think I have ever seen so much winter kill and wind damage.  Every week I am putting out loads of branches for the yard waste trucks.  And this week is no exception.

I have had to cut back all of the roses to the ground for the very first time.  Some like this old shrub rose 'Bonica' has only one little shoot emerging.
My Knock-out roses are also struggling, though this red one seems to be doing OK.
I said I had no garden projects this year but that was before I saw the damaged lawn.  Part due to infiltrating bent grass from the neighbor's yard, part water damage from being so wet in this area, part mole damage from a few years ago and then tree roots and well.... this area of grass needs to be removed.
I have lots of astilbe and sedum I can divide up and plant here.  Actually, it looks nicer in the photo than it actually is.

There are some lovely things at this time of year.  My bleeding heart plant survived the winter.
And the neighbor across the street has this lovely tree in bloom.
Some plants still have not emerged so I am still not sure how bad the damage is.  OTOH, I have vowed not to replace plants so that may mean I have less to maintain.  Which at this stage in life is a good thing.

  1. I love the flowering trees this time of year -- even IF a couple of them really stink! LOL

    1. I am guessing you mean Bradford Pear which is no longer sold around here.

  2. That white blooming tree is really pretty! It is good to see that the bleeding heart survived the winter; must be a hearty plant?

    1. I think it is in a protected spot. This one has lasted there for several years.

  3. it is that time of year and my hubby loves it. My hubby put wraps and whatever to shield the plants from the wind. The ice storm took a few branches down but they all seem to be perking up. The clematis seems to be growing which is great. My hubby wants to make a water feature this year:)

    1. I took my dead butterfly bush back to the nursery this morning and felt much better after the manager told me that all three of hers died this winter. My 'Prince Charming' was dead, lol. Well, he looked good last year while he lasted.
