This is the impetus for my trip to the Netherlands- the Rijksmuseum, built from 1876-1885 and designed by Pierre Cuypers. The museum building itself is quite lovely, and very big, as you can see from the photos. It faces on the Singelgracht.
Of course, everyone comes to see Rembrandt's 'The Night Watch'. Personally, there were other paintings that I found much more appealing.
While it would be hard for me to pick one favorite, I really liked this one below- Winter Landscape with Skaters, Hendrick Avercamp
Though I can hardly omit this Vermeer, The Milkmaid
And of course, one must have a picture of tulips in the Dutch style. This is Floral Still Life by Hans Bollongier.
I made two trips to the museum. There is so much to see - over 1 million pieces in the collection. One of the most interesting was this model of a sailing ship.
And how about this lovely cabinet?
I highly recommend spending a day here at least. I really wanted a great photo of this sign but the Heineken folks were busy filming a commercial so their trucks are in the way.
Have you been to the Rijksmuseum? Do you visit art museums when you travel?
Bonus: Daylily 'Royal Flair'
I agree, I line the winter landscape.
ReplyDeleteI love Vermeer's work. Was in the museum in 1979, but I didn't spend enough time there.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great museum. I normally do visit museums, but I didn't make this one when in the Netherlands, as I had been museum-ed out by this point

It was closed for several years while being restored. I blogged about it in the theme reveal.
DeleteI love the Winter Landscape with Skaters. I like Vermeer's work. Especially Girl With a Pearl Earring. (Did you know there's a movie based on that painting? It's about Vermeer's painting the picture. Stars Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth.) The National Gallery in Washington DC has a great exhibit of his paintings. That ship is GORGEOUS!!!

I've seen the movie and had hoped to go to the Hague to see it but ran out of time. I want to go back to DC to look again at the paintings that were bought from Russia for which the gallery was created.
DeleteBtw, have you seen the documentary Tim's Vermeer? Very enjoyable.
DeleteI do enjoy visiting museums, although I tend to limit my visit to paintings from the 1800-1900s. Otherwise, it is sensory overload for me.
ReplyDeleteThis museum looks gorgeous and I hope to see it some day ... along with VanGogh's museum.
I spent a day at the Van Gogh. It was very interesting.
DeleteWhat an enormous place. It would take forever to see everything. A Swedish blogging friend, Viveka, has just posted a blog about the Keukenhof, she is there this week. This is the link if you want to have a look https://mygulitypleasures.wordpress.com/2017/04/21/a-duch-kitchen-garden-keukenhof/
ReplyDeleteThanks. I will check out the link.
DeleteI must be typing something wrong cause I did not see tulips.
DeleteGot it.
DeleteI spent the day at this museum and loved many other Rembrandts and the Vermeers...just amazing. You know, I remember that chest...it is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love museums and seek them out wherever I go. Never made it to Amsterdam, unfortunately. It looks fascinating. Those tile floors are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe tile floors had been covered up and they were part of the renovation that I mentioned in an earlier post.
DeleteI love art museums, and at 1 million pieces, this museum must be a huge treat.
