D - Delft Pottery, Delft, The Netherlands

I have seen lots of Delft pottery over the years, but I do not own any and do not know of any relatives who do either.  But, no visit to the Netherlands would be complete without a trip to Delft to see the factory built in 1653.

Here is some blue and white pottery in the Rijksmuseum, which inspired the Delft potters.

A style that interests me with a little more color.

Do you own Delft pottery?  Is is something you would want to use?

Bonus:  Hosta 'Dream Queen'

  1. No, I don't own any Delft pottery but it is beautiful. But I do have a bed of hostas out front. And they are beautiful too!

    1. I know you do not care for hosta flowers, but some of these new varieties are rather pretty. And the ones that are fragrant are magnificent - unfortunately even the deer think so.

  2. I don't own any. It's not really my style, though it is pretty.

Inspired by you, I planted some hostas in the fall. We'll see if they survived the winter!

    1. I sure hope they survived. The only time I have lost them is when voles eat the root system.

    1. Oh, I just realized that someone gave me a cheese cutter with a Delft handle. Totally forgot about it.

  4. I'd never heard of Delft pottery before. This is truly beautiful. I'd be heartbroken if one of those pieces broke. Sheer fragile beauty.

    1. I have so much porcelain here - much of it antique - and Depression glassware, that I certainly did not need to buy anything new. That stuff I need to start selling.

  6. I've been to Delft several times, and always came home with some pottery as souvenirs. I've used some of it as decorative accents in my guest bedroom, here: http://www.harmonyhillshomeandgarden.com/2016/09/3-easy-ways-to-decorate-with-souvenirs.html

I loved visiting the little town of Delft, with its "Old Church" and it's "New Church", both older than anything standing in the United States!

    1. Those photos on your site are lovely. It is just that after 50 years of travelling, I have run out of places to put my finds. I have items sitting in boxes. I should have posted pictures of the town.

  7. Wow to The Night Watch in tiles. I suppose they had to really, considering that the Netherlands built and entire museum round that one painting. I have no been to Delft, we really should go.

    1. It was interesting. The town is very quaint. I love how europe preserves everything, and in America we tear it down and start over. And our stuff isn't even as old.

  9. Love the pictures. I would display such things, but never use them. I still question the decision to put china on my wedding registry. We picked a beautiful set, but we don't use it.

    1. I have two good sets of china and three for everyday. None of my sons see any need for good china and crystal. They will be holding one huge estate sale when I am gone.

  10. Beautiful pieces. Thanks for the tour. Blue isn't my favourite colour, so I don't have any of this pottery, but I friend of mine inherited a complete set from her mother. Happy 'D' Day! ☺

  13. Have a couple of pieces of Delft as ornaments. One being a little frog. I have always thought it was very attractive as also the English Willow Pattern.

  14. Looking at the pix of the gal painting the vase I'm wondering if the design is stenciled on there first then painted over. Do you know?

    1. I did not ask, but we saw stenciled designs on porcelain when we visited the porcelain factory in Russia. If you enlarge the photo it looks like she is outlining something that is already there.

  15. I love the blue and white delft pottery. Years ago, I was on a play-date with one of my sons, and the home was all decorated in just blue and white. She had all the pottery - her house was on the ocean - big windows. It was gorgeous. I have some mini delft windmills

  16. That's where I want to go--to Delft--if we visit The Netherlands next year. I love their blue and white pottery (I have a few small pieces), plus I really really really want to see the cobalt Blue Heart of Delft. I was hoping you would post a picture of that. Did you see it?

    1. I did not see it. We really only went there to see the factory.

  20. I have Delft inspired but that doesn't count....basically it's blue and white and I love blue so I think it's really quite pretty. When I saw that picture of that big cabinet filled with the pottery I couldn't help but think, "what if an earthquake hit??" I have no idea why my brain went there. By the way I am so glad that you are showcasing a flower from your garden each day.

    1. I am not a blue person but I did buy a vase in Russia made at the royal porcelain factory. We've only had one very mild tremor here that I can remember. But I guess if we had a real quake, all my stuff in the china cabinet would break.
