So much in the news today about the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago. The televised images are still burned into my mind.
In case you missed it last April, here is a link to my blog about Berlin. I was in the city for the Re-unification Day celebrations. Just like the 4th of July at home.
May we never see another one of these constructed anywhere, including on OUR borders!!!
I couldn't believe it was 25 years ago. Nor did I know (until I followed the Google Doodle today) that so many cities had large slabs of the wall.
ReplyDeleteYup, I hope there is never another.
Apparently, selling 'fake' pieces of the wall is pretty good tourist business in Germany. I did a post about Modlareuth, Germany showing how the wall split a community and even a family farm.
DeleteI just watched a documentary on the history channel with David Hasselhoff as the host(ick but he is loved over there). It was quite interesting as they brought some of the basics that people may not have known about the wall & it's construction. They showed poor Peter (17 yr old who did not make it). They talked to the couple who made it through the tunnel and she was the first with her little girl. Many people who were caught were taken away and they never saw their children again. One thing I did not know was that people were escaping every year even a few months before the wall came down-they were 3 brothers and 2 flew in with some "airplane" and picked up their brother and brought him over. People have no idea how bad this wall was and the communist rule. It took 7 years for my great aunt to prove she needed a fridge (a half size one to boot)
ReplyDeleteI learned about the David Hasselhoff fascination when I was there last year. What am I missing? We saw some interesting items that people used to get through the wall at one of the museums.
