Almost Wordless Wednesday

Salvia 'May Night' - something the deer do not eat - yet.  Blooms all summer and bees love it.  The deer eating all the flowers on plants is contributing to the loss of bee habitat and the bees themselves.

Houttuynia - Say What?

My problems with deer and other four-legged rodents have been well-documented on this site.  I've devoted a lot of time and money trying to keep them out of my yard.

A few years ago I came across a plant that is supposed to be deer-resistant.  Apparently they do not like the smell and avoid it.  The plant is a ground cover called 'Houttuynia'.

It is rather pretty and I have to admit that I have never seen any damage from munching.  The downside is that once well-established it spreads and becomes invasive.  Fortunately, I have yet to deal with that problem.  And if it keeps deer and rabbits away, I'll tolerate it.

I like ground covers.  Especially those that the animals avoid.  Here is a border of lamium and dragon's blood sedum.

The sedum was planted here; the lamium just appeared.  It must have come from another area through rodent transplantation.  I love free stuff.  I also like sedums since they require minimal water.  Then again, it is raining here.  I have yet to water my lawn this year.
