June 21, 1969 Travel Day in Italy

On the train this morning to Brindisi, Italy on the east coast.  There we buy our boat tickets and board the boat to Patras, Greece.  We spend the night on the boat, which I well remember.  But from what I can tell in my diary, we must not have sailed until quite late.  Current travel time online says about 16 hours, but I do not remember any fast ferry service back in 1969, so perhaps it took longer than that.  More tomorrow.

My hotel bill for Naples and my boat ticket sets me back $36.28.

  1. I did that trip in April 1979. We boarded while it was still light out. My Eurailpass was only good for the deck of the ferry, so my friend and I huddled under my sleeping bag. It was cold! Sixteen hours sounds about right, Denise. Looking forward to reading about Greece!

    1. Well, I am glad we bought a ticket for a cabin! I had a hard enough time trying to sleep on a train, let alone the deck of a boat at sea.

  2. Now Greece, that is a country I really loved. I seem to recall there is actually a Roman ruin at Patras which the Greeks were almost as proud of as their own fantastic ruins.

    1. Saw nothing of Patras. It was late and dark when we got there and I just wanted to get to Athens and to sleep.

  3. I remember driving down to Tarranto from Bari in 1990 and there was a sign at Brindisi: "Ferry to Greece →". I wanted to go SO badly, but had to wait until 2013. We flew from Rome to Athens instead. Looking forward to your Greece travelogue! ☺

  4. Was the boat rocking? Is that why you remember it so well?

    1. I remember it because we shared a cabin with two other girls and I had an upper bunk.

  5. A long journey but I bet the destination was worth every minute of it!

    1. I would love to ride the Orient Express. I have traveled from Detoit to Utah by train. And took the train to Toronto. Driving is faster, lol.
