W - Windmills in Kinderdijk, Netherlands

Ah, windmills.  Last year I mentioned Holland, Michigan which has a windmill brought over from the Netherlands before the practice was stopped.  Of course I had to visit windmills in the Netherlands.

The Kinderdijk Mill Network is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Enjoy the video and my photos.

Have you ever been inside a windmill?  Have you ever visited tulip time in Holland, Michigan?

  1. That bed is so small. Reminds me of the beds in the little huts in Plimoth Plantation (that's how it was originally spelled.) The colony has been recreated near Plymouth, Mass., and there is an entire village. It feels very much like the inside of that windmills.

    1. It is even smaller if you see someone standing next to it, but I did not think my friend wanted to appear on my blog.

  2. There's something very attractive about the sight of a windmill against the backdrop of the blue sky. I don't think I'd ever tire of the sight.

    1. It's very peaceful and we actually saw one of the families out tending their property.

  3. Such a simple concept, wind power.

    The pictures are beautiful.

    1. We've had lots of wind here this year. Rather unusual for us.

    1. I'm glad I went. My impetus was to see a UNESCO site, but it turned out to be a pleasant day.

  5. So beautiful. I'd love to get there. I like the way the bed is squirreled away in the living quarters.

    1. Everything was squirreled away. It's like living in one of those tiny houses they show on TV.

  6. I would love to visit a windmill in the Netherlands. Our wind turbines don't have the same style although I'm a fan of alternative energies so I appreciate them. WeekendsInMaine

    1. I remember visiting the one in Holland, MI but do not remember seeing the inside. I can fully understand why they stopped selling them off. These are all still working and it was interesting to see the families living there.

  8. I have seen windmills in Holland, Belgium and England, but other than Detroit I've never visited Michigan. Great photos.

  9. I learned so much about windmills in that video! Thanks for including it. I didn't realize the different ways they need to adjust the "sails" and that it takes a knowledge of wind and sailing to handle the job. Interesting!

  11. Trying to catch up! First...love that Lily...love the colours in it. That is pretty cool to see The interior. The only interior of a windmill I remember seeing is the one in the movie Chitty, Chitty Bang, Bang

  12. Impressive sight, thoses windmills! The interior seems a bit cramped, though. Never had the experience of looking inside. My forays into Michigan have only been Detroit, Ann Arbor and Frankenmuth.

  13. The room is tiny, but it looks like there are rooms above, as well. The windmills are lovely, you've piqued my interest, now I'll have to research windmills.

    1. Yes, there are room above. Straight up and down staircases - ladders actually. A little too cramped for me and I grew up in a small house.
