Michigan just passed a $54.9 BILLION budget. According to the local paper, they take in $4 million in taxes and fees from fireworks. Really? The four million makes a big difference? Give me a break.
I've gone on and on about this issue and nothing seems to happen to change the situation. Four houses burned in Highland Park. A fireworks store on the west side of the state goes up in flames - and sparks I assume. There is no reporting system statewide for injuries so who knows how many of those occur. Most folks I know have given up calling the police to complain.
Anyway, I sat up watching the commons area behind me hoping that sparks did not set it on fire. My son was not so lucky in his neighborhood as young kids, who shouldn't have been using fireworks in the first place, set their commons area on fire and destroyed 5000 square feet of property.
This is just part of the damage as seen from the car. Thank the local firefighters for containing the damage to grass and shrubs. Oh, and there is a gas main under that burned out area so thank goodness there was no leak.
I'll spare you the rest of my rant.
Except for public displays of them, I really think private sales of fireworks should be prohibited no matter what state. They were always prohibited in Southern California because of the possibility of setting off a fire that had the potential for widespread damage. They were legal here in Phoenix, but not in Prescott, 1-1/2 hours away, again for the same reason, fire conditions. We didn't buy any or had intention to buy any. I asked my son, now that he lives some place where they were legal, and his earlier fascination with them when we lived other places where they weren't legal but still people managed to get them and set them off, if he was going to get any fireworks this year. He said (wisely) "no, I don't want to lose a finger."

Locally I heard that someone lost an eye.
DeleteI place my hand on my head and shake my head wondering how stupid everyone is. I can't even find the words. I bet Firemen are on your side. I had just heard a young man stepped on a firework that went off and now the poor guy has no foot. Why do the fireworks have such power? There must be tons of money being exchanged
ReplyDeleteAll of the money going to China.
DeleteDefinitely ban sales of fireworks to private peoples. They are so damned dangerous it's time someone woke up. Other than us that is.
ReplyDeleteOh, but they generate revenue
