F: 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe' and Frankenmuth, Michigan

'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe'

I saw the movie and I had to read the book.  And then I bought a copy for my bookcase.

When I saw the movie and heard that the book was written by Fannie Flagg my thought was that isn't she some actress on TV?  Well, she was.  And since her given name is Patricia Neal, she had to find a pen name.

Even if you have seen the movie, I encourage you to read the book.  It is just delightful.  And if you haven't seen the movie, read the book first.  Either way, you won't be disappointed.

And in case you want to make your own fried green tomatoes, here is a recipe.

Who doesn't love Christmas decorations?  And in Frankenmuth, you can see them and shop year-round.  Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is in itself worth a visit.  Throw in one of the fried chicken dinners at either of two restaurants and your day trip is pretty much full.

  1. I LOVE that movie! Even better than the book, IMO, but the book is good too. I didn't realize she was an actress. Nice to learn something new.

  2. Perfect choice for F, Denise, and an instance where the book AND movie were both so good. I didn't know that about Fannie Flagg - always thought she was just born with a ready-made author name!!

  5. Okay wait...so Fannie Flagg and Patricia Neal are the same person? Isn't Patricia Neal the actress who opened a hospital in East TN? I'm going to have to look that up because if so, I was in her hospital a few years ago and had no idea she and Fannie Flagg were the same person.

    1. No. Fannie Flagg's real name is Patricia Neal, but since Patricia Neal already was an established actress, Flagg had to change her name and become Fannie Flagg. Two people. Not sure if Patricia Neal is using her real name or not. Confused?

  6. I did see the movie a long time ago. I don't remember much about it though. Having lived in NC for a number of years, I came across fried green tomatoes quite a lot. I enjoy them. I also enjoy squash cooked the same way.

  7. I am playing catch up. She is the lady for. candid Camera also. I didn't know she wrote the book. It's also rare that the movie is as good as the book. I hVe been to. Frankenmouth and would love to go back. Spent the whole day at the. Christmas store and the other highlight for me was this crèche village...it was amazing! It was not on the typical tourist
It's because it was created by 2 Italian men fro. What I can remember. Worth seeing
