C: Calvin and Hobbes and Charlevoix, Michigan

I admit it:  I read the comics.  Every day.  Now, I do not read all of them, but I do have my favorites.
Calvin and Hobbes ran for ten years, 1985 - 1995.  I was truly saddened when Bill Watterson announced he would no longer be writing the comic.  It remains my all-time favorite strip.

What is not to love about a little boy and his toy tiger - his imaginary friend so to speak.

I own every book in the series.  I was even tempted to buy the complete series compendium when it was issued (Costco can be so tempting).

So, go ahead, be a kid again.  I can't wait to read these with Charlie when he gets older.

Charlevoix, Michigan
You can't do this as a day trip from where I live in Southeast Michigan, but it is where we took our children for several summer vacations when they were young.  Grandma and her friends would drive up from Chicago to stay with us and we all had a great time.  We would bring our ski boat up to spend time on the inland lake.  I never visited Castle Farms, a summer home built in 1918 by Alfred Loeb of Chicago, but it sounds like something I would enjoy.  (Loeb was the father of Richard Loeb of the 'Leopold and Loeb case').  You can also have a great time just walking around and seeing the 'mushroom houses'.

    1. I just realized that they still have them in some papers, but not here. I rad the old Peanuts strip every day.

  5. I never got into Calvin & Hobbs but I love it that you have the whole collection! I bought Herman, B.C. and Gary Larson. That place you visited sounds intriguing and especially the sad connection to that case.

  7. Being an ex pat Brit I don't know this children's series although I have seen pictures of the characters here and there. I have a couple of children's books which I love and still read now and again.

    1. I am not sure I would classify as children's lit cause I think they would miss most of the humor.

  12. I remember one of the hardest things to do was read the comics to Richard after his stroke. He read every bit of the newspaper but his vision was messed up for awhile after his stroke. Thank goodness it came back eventually! He loved Calvin and Hobbes

    1. I tried to read the comics to Charlie one day. He is two. He kept trying to 'swipe' the panels like he does on the Kindle. It was hilarious.

  18. Hello from A to Z. I'm a new follower of your blog. I loved Calvin & Hobbes. Most people believe Hobbes was imaginary, but I choose to believe he was real and that only Calvin had the gift to see that.

    1. Well, he made his toy tiger his friend, which is slightly better than my son who just had a friend no one could even see, lol.

  19. Oh wow...you are a fan if you have all the books. I'm impressed! I remember reading that one as a kid, but I never thought about the fact that he had a tiger for a friend.
