Windows 10 -Teaching an old dog new tricks

I am pretty sure that 50 years ago my life was much simpler.  It was the summer of my freshman year in college.  I was taking one Chemistry class in Qualitative Analysis, an easy A.  I was working part-time for the J.L. Hudson Company in downtown Detroit, selling wedding dresses in the Bridal Department.  I had no computer and had probably not even heard of one.  How my life would eventually change.  Twenty years later I was back in grad school and buying my first computer.

Which brings me to today.  At about 6:15 this morning I installed Windows 10 on my computer.  Life as I knew it yesterday has ceased to exist.  Gone is that 18000+ winning streak for Free Cell.  For that matter, Free Cell is gone.  Uninstalled by the update.  As were all the other old games.

My Internet Explorer browser stopped working ages ago, but it too is gone and replaced by Edge which I do not think I will ever use.  Thankfully, when I started using Google Chrome, I imported all of my favorites and bookmarks from I.E. or those would be gone too.

My photo editing tools are gone, replaced by new tools to learn.  Since I only had about an hour to take a look at my computer while Charlie had his nap, I have no idea what other new experiences await me.

I liked Windows 7.  I never really had any issues with it.  I've been having issues again with McAfee, which keeps preventing my browser from opening so that I have to turn off the firewall, open Chrome,  and then turn it back on.  My kids suggested a different security system, but really, do I want to deal with that AND Windows 10?

I'm an old dog that is getting tired of having to constantly learn new tricks.  Are you installing Windows 10?  Since Microsoft will be phasing out Windows 7 updates in the future, you may have no choice.  Just be prepared.

  1. OMG! My hubby was talking about installing that and I am going to tell him No!! Or at least wait until my ex is here since he is saavy( spelling??) with computers. I like my old fashioned web as I am not on chrome. I love my pictures where they are and all the games that are on here. To me that sounds scary. I am also surprised that you worked downtown Detroit back then considering how bad it is now...what a shame. Oh BTW-that would not be an easy A for me at all:)

    1. I was downtown from 1964 til 1977. It has only been the last few years that I do not go down anymore. If I was relying on Internet Explorer and found it all gone I would have been p---ed.

  2. I am dithering about installing it too. But only on my desktop, leaving the laptop for now. Everything on my PC is backed up off site so I should be OK there but..... I'm the same about having to constantly learn new stuff, it's a right pain in the rear end.

    1. Yeah. And I have enough pains without having one there too.

    2. Thanks for the "heads up".
Interesting how Birgit finds it surprising that one would have worked in downtown Detroit.
Oh my. Dear Birgit...Detroit was one of the largest and active cities in the country. Some Broadway shows would start here instead of Broadway and Hudsons, oh my, we all went to Hudsons downtown even after they built the malls in the suburbs. Hudsons not only sold everything we needed but also provided restaurants, entertainment, parades and fireworks.

  3. Yikes! My husband and I were talking about this last night. I think we'll hold off the install for as long as we can. I can't imagine having to learn all-new photo editing tools. I have Photoshop Elements and Lightroom and they are complected enough. I assume (there's that word) that the Windows update wouldn't uninstall those programs... would it?

    1. No. The update only affected windows products. I have other photo editing programs but used windows. Time to switch?

    2. If you click on the little Windows 10 icon you can then click on the three lines at the top left and it gives you a menu where you can tell if things are compatible or not.

    3. Well if you have already upgraded, maybe it's gone, but there is a small windows icon near my clock etc. which is where I was first offered the upgrade. It is the usual square cut into 4.

  4. Right. The Icon is now on the left. I am going go spend Sunday following the online tutorial.
