Exactly Fifty Years ago Today...

to the day.  Just when you think the news can't get worse Amazon Photos sends you the day's photos from years past.  Imagine my surprise when I saw my wedding photo.  Apparently, I had uploaded it to the cloud on my wedding anniversary several years ago.  Total coincidence I assure you.

In another week I will be celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of my divorce.  While we had been separated for two years, it took that long to settle everything.  And since I got tired of waiting, I even gave up some money just to be done with the ordeal.

I do not talk much about my wedding.  It was held in a judge's chambers.  It was last minute.  It had not been at all planned.  It was a way out of a bad situation that I rarely ever talk about - an abusive mother who thought filicide was the answer.

Out of that disastrous situation eventually came three beautiful sons.  And that was after three different doctors told me I would never bear children.  So much for the all-knowing medical profession.

Fifty years later I am making French toast and taking care of Charlie.

So, September 4, 1970.  Do you remember where you were?  What you were doing?

  1. Great you are spending the day with a grandson you wouldn't have if you hadn't gotten married to the man you did. I can't be exact that this is what I was doing 50 years ago but it was probably the last week of summer vacation before I started 8th grade.

    1. Now I feel old, lol. At this time of the day we would have been on our way to Mackinac Island. Which is where I was hoping to be this year.

  2. On Sept 4, 1970 I was entering my sophomore year of High School.

I divorced my ex October of 1998. We also had physically separated for 3 years but had lived apart in the house. Gads, that was a awful time in my life. He was my HS sweetheart. ugh! Young and dumb, what can I say?

    1. Divorce is awful. We lived separate lives in the same house for one year. Amazing that I survived.

  3. It's funny how the past can slip into the present. September 4th, 1970, I was in ninth grade. Not much happened that year that I can remember.

    1. Funny how the internet age changes our lives. I remember when we had to get out photo albums.

  4. Well on that date I was still living in England and the multiple divorces between me an my husband, Matt and his wife plus it dominoed. I was no doubt learning Scuba diving at the time which is how I met Matt. Don't know what I was actually doing on that day. Filicide was a word I had never heard before. I guessed from the roots but Googled just to be sure. Sorry you had such a bad start in life.

    1. Scuba diving? I tried it once in the Bahamas. I am not a water person and did not enjoy it one bit. I actually think I had a panic attack.
It's amazing what so many of us can overcome.

  5. I was sitting in the backseat of a Volvo my parents picked up at the factory in Sweden, complaining I was "forced" to travel around Europe for a year! Yup. 13 years olds, especially girls, are the worst. I started high school with my peers on time, which might have been what I was worried about, being behind. I must have been a real pain. I know I refused to get out of the car at the Eiffel Tower!

  6. I'm no fan of divorce, but it does happen. I've had two of them from marriages that gave me a son in the first and 3 wonderful daughters in the second. Now I'm 23 years into my third marriage. Hopefully there will be no divorce this time.

September 1970? Don't recall specifically what I was doing, but since I was in my second year of college at the time I guess I was doing college things. Seems so long ago.

  7. Hello Denise:
Jo, who used to post every day, has suddenly stopped and has not been heard from at all as far as I can tell. Do you happen to know the reason for her absence? Ironically, I live just north of her, but I never got to know her address or anything about her beyond what transpired on the blog. I fear the news cannot be good.
