June 20, 1969 Pompeii, Amalfi Drive, Sorrento

A busy touring day today as we board a bus to see the sights.  Our first stop was Pompeii to see 'more rubble'.  Actually I found it very interesting.  The city was buried by Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.

After our visit and history lesson, we drove to Amalfi for lunch.  I do not remember our lunch or anything about Amalfi, but I do remember the drive on the Amalfi Coast road.  Aiye-yi-yi.

We took the road to Sorrento, which I also don't remember and then back to Naples.  Maybe it is because I had my eyes closed most of the way?  We are worn out and just want to sleep.

Expenses are only $2.40.

  1. When I visit such places I try to be interested for the sake of the guide, but often I'm not!

    1. Until I read the diary I could not even remember being in Sorrento. That coast road I will never forget.

  2. Trouble is we are spoilt over here most of the roads are so very wide. Although I always surprised me the road past the asparagus farm is hardly 2 cars wide with a speed limit of 80 Kms/hr. Ridiculous. Now I see that thar mountain!!

    1. Of course, they do drive much smaller cars over there.

  3. I would think Pompeii would be interesting to see in person, especially these days when we see the destruction of the lava in Hawaii.

  4. Pompeii was fascinating to me! They were so far ahead of their time and obliterated so tragically.

  5. I would love to see Pompeii and always have been fascinated with this ancient city. They just found another body and I had to laugh because some boulder smacked this poor guy right in the head. The driving in Europe is crazy and up mountains is beyond nuts

    1. A long time ago I saw a program that theorized what happened to the people there when the eruption occurred. Pretty crazy.
