Planning an Easter Dinner

It's that time of year.  Daylight saving time starts.  I hate it, but that is an old story I've told before.

It is also time to start thinking about my Easter dinner menu.  Someone asked me recently if I still celebrated all the Christian holidays, even though I am not a religious person.  I said yes.  After all, these special times of year were celebrated long before Christianity came along.  The lovely arrival of spring.  I hope.

My menu is pretty well established except for dessert.  I cannot make up my mind.  Coconut?  Lemon?  Chocolate?  Cheesecake?  Trifle?  Layer cake?  Aarrgghh!

Here is the menu:

Pita Bread & Hummus
Spanakopita Puffs

Greek Salad w
Feta, Tomato & Cucumber

Grilled Leg of Lamb w Tabil Spice
Chicken Souvlaki w Tzatziki
Rice Pilaf
Greek-style Green Beans

So, if you were dining with us, what dessert would you like?  What is your favorite indulgence?

P.S.  No, I am not Greek.  But having worked in the Greektown area of Detroit for ten years, I learned to love the food.  And one of my Greek co-workers shared many of her recipes with me.

  1. My husband's Easter dinner (which he will make, for the most part) will be all Italian, combined with some Passover-friendly food so I can eat (I wouldn't be able to indulge in most of your menu, alas, as wonderful as it sounds). I would have Passover chocolate goodies but I think, with your menu, something lemony might work better. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. Years ago a very good friend invited me to her Passover feast. A lot of food to be sure. I alternate between Greek, Italian, and Polish-Russian menus for holidays.

    2. Thanks for the lemon suggestion. My lemon cake with lemon curd would be good.

  2. I agree, lemon, even though chocolate is my favorite.

    1. I'm hoping for decent weather so I can grill outside.

  3. Although I love chocolate, I don’t think it is the right dessert. A nice lemon dessert is good or maybe something with honey?

    1. I was thinking I could make truffles rolled in coconut, too. I will have extra whipping cream after I make my cake.

  4. I do like your menu, wish I was there. We usually go camping with the family at Easter as it is the last holiday with good weather before winter sets in. I would make a lemon meringue pie to go with the lovely Greek mains. Enjoy your Easter whatever you cook.

    1. Lemon meringue pie. Never ever thought of that. It was my sister's favorite when we were growing up. Thanks for the suggestion.

  5. I'm a big fan of chocolate but always go with something citrusy or coconut or both for Easter. My sister is making the Hummingbird cake from Southern Living. We all love it and it feels perfect for spring. Your Greek menu sounds yummy!

  6. How about pistachio or cardamom ice cream? Vanilla ice cream with stewed figs? Poppy seed strudel?

    1. I just saw an ad from Whole Foods with a vanilla cake and fresh berries. Might just take the easy way out.

  7. Sounds amazing! I love the idea of having a Greek dinner. Greek food is the best.

My dessert vote would be for the lemon or the coconut.

    1. I am making my lemon cake with lemon curd today. I was going to make coconut macaroons, but opted to make orange scones for breakfast. Enough sweets for one holiday.
