I - Ice Cream

Ice cream is almost never my first choice for dessert, usually opting for pie or carrot cake.  But, I just love good ice cream whenever it is available.  Pie ala mode, yes.  Ice cream on waffles, yes.  Ice cream cones, yes.  Yes, yes, yes.   And so I took advantage of what was offered.

In Germany we had sundaes.  (I can't tell you the city or I will give away one of the letters)

In Belgium, it was waffles with ice cream
I loved the Brussels waffles so much I made them as dessert for our Christmas dinner.  I used King Arthur Flour's waffle mix and substituted sparkling water for the regular water.  And I would have taken a picture but my guests were too busy gobbling them up.  Me too.

Are you an ice cream lover?  Or is gelato or sherbet a favorite?  Do you over-indulge in sweet treats on vacation?

  1. All look delicious with the ice cream!! I'm not too much of an ice cream lover these days. I don't eat it when it is cold outside and lately sweets haven't appealed to me much, salt though does :)

    1. Hmmm. The only time I ever craved salt was when I was pregnant, LOL. I can eat ice cream in the winter, but for dietary purposes I stick to my yogurt and convince myself it is ice cream. That's kinda funny too.

  2. Those all look delectable but I shy away from ice cream these days. Trying to lose weight! :P I remember going out for ice cream sundaes a lot when we lived in Germany. The wafers were just as important.

  3. I love ice cream, but not all types. Some colours put me off. I feel they're more unhealthy than they have a right to be.

    1. I make really good ice cream but the fat content is worse than what I buy in the stores. Probably why it is so good. My favorite flavor is a store brand called salted caramel truffle.

  5. That's a great idea to use waffles for dessert. I used to love it when we would spend time on the beach in Belgium - Ostend usually - and have waffles from a street vendor - delicious!

    1. I never liked waffles until I tasted them in Belgium. But then, their waffle is not like those in America. My family loved the waffles for dessert.

  6. I always head to ice cream on a vacation, but I also have to watch my weight Conflict! I love ice cream, gelato, and Italian Ice. Your pictures looked so yummy. I remember eating a Belgium Waffle at the 1964 New York World's Fair - they were a huge hit there. Alana rmmblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I stayed at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville many years ago. There was a company there selling the best butter pecan ice cream ever. I ate more ice cream than real food.

    (Breakfast first, Jz, breakfast first...)
I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures, however. Thank you!

  9. That ice cream looks sooooo creamy! I'm a huge fan of ice cream and I don't think it's ever too early to eat it ... it does belong to the dairy food group! Love your photos here!

  10. I do like ice cream, but only occasionally. I love butterscotch and cassata. From your pics, I would choose the chocolate and peanut topped one. I've never tried ice cream on waffles. Will see if I can find them here in my city.

  12. I love ice cream but I am lactose intolerable. Still, for chocolate, rules were made to be broken.

What you have inspired me to do, Denise, is to make homemade vanilla ice cream, which I shall, and soon.

  16. I like a nice sundae. I think it's perfectly okay to treat yourself on holiday as long as you eat sensibly the rest of the time. You're there to enjoy yourself and unwind after all!

  18. I love ice cream. Never eaten waffles of any kind though. I prefer my ice cream on its own anyway. If I have pie (not often) I don't want ice cream, I want cream.

    Lovely daylilly.

  21. Do you ever overindulge on sweets when on vacation?.....my response...Hahahaaaaaa. In 1993, when my ex and I were in Heidelberg, he asked what I wanted to eat for dinner and I said, "Cake!" I have had gelato but don't know the difference between gelato and ice cream...what's th difference??

    1. Life is short. Eat dessert first!

Gelato has less fat content, using milk instead of cream and often has no eggs, which means you can eliminate that heating step to make it. It still tastes pretty damn good.

  22. I definitely over indulge in sweet treats when I'm on holiday - I love trying different things but ice cream is always a go to dessert. Your sundaes look amazing and I'm a big fan of waffles as well, with my favourite being simple vanilla ice cream with loads of caramel sauce. Great pictures.

    1. We set a waffle bar with assorted ice creams and sauces for Christmas. My boys loved it and I like that they commented it was much easier for me than making a fancy dessert. They are so considerate while filling their faces, lol.

  23. Yes I am a ice cream lover and could eat it morning noon and night. I don't, of course. If I make it to 90, I plan to.
