Wednesday Hodgepodge

Many moons ago I think I participated in some Wednesday Hodgepodge, but it was quite a while back.   I read the questions yesterday and thought that rather than post a pic of flowers eaten by the deer, I'd answer some questions instead.  So, here goes.

1. It's officially summer (in the northern hemisphere anyway). Which summer month is best and why?
I love July because all of the daylilies are blooming.  I have moved almost all of them to the fenced back yard to get them away from the deer.  I am so-o-o-o sick of deer.  Ugh!

2. Can you swim? How did you learn? June 27th is National Sunglasses Day. How many pair do you own?
I can swim.  It was required to have one full semester of swimming when I was in high school.  I got my life-saving certificate.  I HATE swimming even if I am good at it.  I just don't like the water.
I have three pairs of sunglasses, including one pair from the 1970s which a friend refers to as my 'Jackie O's'.

3. What characteristic do you judge most harshly in yourself? How about in others?
I'm very out-spoken, but I do not judge it harshly, though others may.  I cannot tolerate racial and ethnic slurs, but I tend to hold my tongue rather than get into it with someone who is probably too ignorant to understand my feelings.  And thus I judge my silence harshly when I should be speaking up.

4. Robert Frost wrote the now well known poem entitled The Road Not Taken. What's a road (literal or figurative) you've always wanted to travel, and where do you hope it takes you?
I've always wanted to drive the Trans-Canada Hwy from Calgary north through the Canadian Rockies all the way to Jasper.  It is probably the only road trip I will never finish.

5. Popsicles-yay or nay? If you answered yay, what's your favorite flavor?  Nay, nay, nay.

6. Brexit-on a scale of 1-10 how knowledgeable are you on what's involved here? (1=very knowledgeable and 10=what's Brexit) Is this news you'll follow or is it something you think won't impact your life in any way shape or form?
Should I say a 1?  I am pretty knowledgable, unlike the voters who Googled 'What is the EU?' AFTER the vote.  Are you kidding me???  I'll keep following what is going on especially as it concerns both my international and domestic investments.

7. Share a favorite song on your summer play list.
Play list?  Is that what I do with Charlie when we sing the ABC's?  Or 'Itsy, Bitsy, Spider?'

8. Insert your own random thought here.
Speaking of Brexit:  Independence is what the United States got from Britain in the 1776 Revolutionary War.  We, along with more than 40 countries and territories, have gotten independence from Britain.  Britain is already independent and now that they are leaving the EU, they will really discover how independent they will have to be in the future.

  1. I read a statistic somewhere (not that it matters with your deer problems) that more deer get killed hit by motorists than by hunting.

I have to admit I was one that didn't know much about the European Union (but I knew the name at least, LOL) and hadn't heard the term Brexit before last week. I did take the time to educate myself and I am a bit concerned with it all.

    1. I find it very concerning especially when you consider all that is going on in the world. As for the deer, I so wish our community could have a re-do vote about allowing bow-hunting for deer in our nature preserve. Bambi and her family are no longer cute.

  2. I like your playlist! I don't think anyone, including the politicians who have made such a mess of the UK, can be classed as a 1 on the Brexit scale there is no precedent for this. We don't feel like a united kingdom at the moment and we are definitely not Great!

    1. I can understand your frustration. Our news this morning says that Donald is gaining on Hillary in the polls. He is particularly popular with young, uneducated white men. Oh, joy. We don't seem much too united here either.

  3. I think it's horrifying that people who were entitled to vote in Britain still didn't know what the EU was anyway. Or much about anything else. I have seen comments about the young sticking it to the oldsters. The whole thing is a big worry and I don't live there any more. I used to love to swim although haven't done so in along while. My regular glasses darken in the sun so I don't need sunglasses.

You North Americans changed it, it is Incy Wincy spider originally. Not too sure of the spelling mind you. Have you put in your application to emigrate to Canada yet?

    1. Incy Wincy? Oh, I'll have to Google that. News to me. My oldest once told me that only folks who know the issues should vote, that lower turnout is better than every idiot showing up at the polls.

    2. OMG. I've been singing it wrong FOREVER.

  4. I hold my tongue a LOT, especially right now with the elections going on. Some of the older people I know and love will say some of the most infuriating things. I know they come from a different time, and no matter what I say, they're going to feel how they feel, but I try to gently show them that they're wrong when I can. That approach never works, by the way!

    1. Yeah, I hate to waste my breath on ignorant people.

  5. I love deer, they are so pretty. But we never have them come visit our yard. I wish that we did. One of the neighborhoods a little ways from our house is loaded with them. The people put out deer corn and mamas and babies and all size deer show up for the feast. It's great!

I bet your flowers are beautiful. Our lilies haven't bloomed in quite some time. I am assuming that the floods killed them.

I find politics frustrating all the way around. No matter who or what we vote for, it seems to be the wrong thing. I vote anyway and pray that something good will come of it.

I hope that you'll get to take the trip that you mentioned. It sounds wonderful!

    Have a blessed week. :)

    1. 15 years ago when the deer first appeared I thought they were cute . I would even put corn out in the park for them to feed. Then they started coming to the yard and eating shrubbery. Then they started eating all the flowers. Thousands upon thousands of dollars later I've had enough. The yard is fenced and I'm through.

  6. I am not surprised (sadly) at how the Brits voted from ignorance, and now they want a do-over. Unfortunately, if it had been our country, we would have done the exact same thing - voted first and then researched. If we even voted. There's that, too. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I just hope we are not looking for a do-over in November.

  7. There are often times when we hear someone we know to be otherwise intelligent going on about something and we have to be quiet and listen. There are many who think they are actually getting their point across, or who think they are giving the most persuasive talk in the world, when those around are thinking to themselves, "How could this person be so wrong?"

    1. I spent 20 years in public politics. There were times when people would appear before our Township board and they would go on and on and I would just sit there and wonder who ties their shoes for them.

  9. I moved from Kentucky to Germany last year, and Brexit is HUGE news over here. I think that this could have far-reaching consequences, though I certainly hope it does not. We shall see!

    1. I was in the Netherlands and Belgium for two weeks in May and though I rarely hear any news when I travel, I did hear about Brexit. People who want to believe we do not need a global economy and want a return to isolationism, like the Trump supporters, are idiots in my opinion.

  10. What's the EU? Arrgggh! Voters-yikes! It's hard to be completely well-informed I think due to the bias of ALL media, but you've got to at least try.

  11. I'm afraid I am one of those ignorant people who didn't know much about EU and Brexit. But then I have no investments of any kind to protect! I use the good old Google when I need to educate myself. I just didn't feel the need in this case. We have deer here too that like to wander in and eat the flowers. I don't really mind that much. But then I don't have a lot for them to eat!!

    1. But you were not voting on it, either. Those were Brits asking what it was after they voted. Sad.
