O: Oz and Old Mission Peninsula

My favorite part in the movie 'The Wizard of Oz' is Judy Garland singing the song 'Over the Rainbow'.  I am not a huge fan of the movie itself, though I do own the DVD.  To tell the truth, when I saw this movie as a child, those monkeys scared the bejeezus out of me.

I do however own this illustrated edition of the book.  As a matter of fact, I have several books illustrated by Michael Hague.

I love these childrens' books just because they are so beautifully illustrated.  Pictures aren't just for kids (which is why I own that illustrated Lord of the Rings).

I have never read any of the other Oz books. How about you?

Old Mission Peninsula:  April is 'wine month' In Michigan and there are seven wonderful wineries on the peninsula.  But even if you are not a wino, the drive is gorgeous.  You can stay in Traverse City and make a day-trip around the peninsula, stop and have a meal at one of the fine restaurants or visit quaint shops.  This brings me to another book on my shelf which is great for Michigan wine enthusiasts.

While visiting Old Mission you will also want to head over to the Leelanau Peninsula where you can visit the winery run by Madonna's parents, Ciccone Winery, among many others.  Here is the link to the Michigan Wine Country magazine.

  2. I never read the books either. The Wizard of Oz is also not my favourite film although I also love that song. That song almost didn't make it into the film. Mayer wanted to cut the song feeling it slowed the film down but the director and song writers fought for it and he gave in. I thought the witch was stupid because she had a pail of water just hanging around and that's what did her in.

  3. I like the sound of the illustrated Oz book. I must have a look ASAP. I enjoy the movie, but then I'm into dark fantasy.

  5. When I first saw the movie I don't remember being scared. I have never read the books. The film, nowadays, annoys the hell out of me.

Now wine country does interest me. But our own is closer of course.

  6. I haven't read any of the Oz books...that I remember. I do think there are some things I read as a child that I don't remember, though, for some reason. My mom has told me about books I read and movies/TV shows I watched that I have no memory of at all.

  9. I have never actually read the Wizard of Oz book, but the movie always scared me. I still can't watch that movie!

I often go up to Door County in the summer to go to wineries, I might have to make a trip up to Michigan to try some wineries there!
