The Non-Event

I guess folks around here have run out of money to burn - literally, to burn.  I only heard a few 'pops' of fireworks on Sunday night.  Is it possible I slept through it?  Or have folks realized that spending hundreds of dollars to make noise makes no 'cents' or sense.

A relative told me years ago to remember that it 'takes money to make money' and nobody ever got rich by wasting precious dollars.  Last year a couple was interviewed about buying fireworks and they said they had spent 'several hundreds' of dollars on explosives to take 'up North'.  Someone I talked to who lives 'up North', next to a State camp ground, complained that folks were traipsing onto private land to set off their haul of fireworks, since using them on State land is illegal.

Gee, if the State thought this was such a great idea, why not let them use it on State land.  Oh, you are worried about fires?  Better to burn down a house?  As has actually happened at least twice in my community that I know of.

Anyway, the worst offender in my neighborhood has moved out and the house is for sale.  Maybe all the other yahoos are also gone having spent their mortgage money on fireworks?

I guess the 4th of July will be the real test of the great desire to just 'make a lot of noise'.  We are not talking the 'bombs bursting in air' variety of fireworks, but rather the 'bombs blowing up stuff' variety.  Nice going Legislators.

Since the talk in passing this bill was that it would bring in $600 million a year in revenue, why not use that money to fix the roads?  BTW, how much revenue is it bringing in?  Just a thought...

Fireworks in Victoria, BC celebrating Canada Day

  1. Ok wait a sec...am I reading this right? The legislators are allowing people to now blow things up? Umm in this day and age of terrorist activity this is going to be allowed. Please tell me I read this all wrong. You are lucky those people left. We still have the family who buy fireworks and let their little kids use them. I hate these things and want them banned! I agree with you about people who set off fireworks on private property-why won't the state allow that on their land then?

    1. Yes, folks setting off fireworks inside mailboxes for one. You can't sell fireworks to someone under 18, but a parent can buy them for their kids. Lots of noise and not much else. Just to make a few bucks.

  2. Come to think of it, I didn't hear any fire works either. 4th of July will be another story though.

  3. Two years ago, I visited a friend living in New York City on July 4. We had a nice BBQ. Then, once the sun started to set, the full festivities began. I don't mean the official Macy's fireworks that are broadcast on network TV. No, I mean the illegal fireworks in her part of Brooklyn. I can't say we weren't warned but I thought my friend had exaggerated. She hadn't. It went on and on and on until past 2am. The next morning, and this is not an exaggeration, the streets were covered so thickly in spent fireworks that you couldn't see the asphalt. How many hundreds of thousands of lower middle class dollars went up in smoke the night before? It boggles the mind. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. That sounds exactly like my neighborhood last year. My guests from Texas could not believe that fireworks are ALLOWED in cities and townships. NO restrictions.

  4. Glad you had a peaceful time after all Denise. They still let of lots of them on Victoria Day weekend, a minimum of 3 days, even a few extra bangs on other nights.

  6. Fireworks used to be illegal in our town. But it didn't stop them from setting them off. And the cops have more important crimes to attend to. Unfortunately a citizen group got fireworks ban turned around and now they are legal. But only on the 4th of July for the three days surrounding the holidays. I have never heard any on Memorial Day.

    1. I had to call the police last night. Seems like folks around here feel they can do whatever they please. And I agree that the cops have better things to do. When they were illegal they at least had to cross state lines to buy them. Now they sell them just about everywhere.
