It's That Freakin' Fireworks Time Again

Last year I started on online petition to ban fireworks in Michigan.  This legislative session has seen two bills introduced to allow local units to regulate fireworks.  SB 0300 and HB 4367 both allow slight oversight by local units without completely banning them.  Don't hold your breath waiting for action on these.

I've already heard fireworks on Easter Sunday because I am sure that the early Christians were all setting them off when Christ arose from the dead.  Well, maybe it was the intense noise that did it.  The last two Sundays have also witnessed a few being set off.  I guess folks want to make sure they work before they start this week-end.

Legally, they can only set them off Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, though why you need to celebrate the day after a holiday totally escapes me.

I feel sorry for all the animals, children and the veterans suffering from PTSD who have to live through this nightmare.  I am actually dreading the entire week-end.

If you signed the petition last year, I thank you.  If you would like to sign now, the petition is in the right hand column of this blog.  No one in Lansing listens to us peons, but your signing it makes me feel better.

Have a safe Memorial Day week-end.

  1. I always think about the animals and veterans with PTSD during 4th of July. It's horrible for them, but banning fireworks seems pretty impossible with everyplace selling them and everyone buying them.

    1. We used to ban them but the state saw dollar signs. Now they are allowed for every holiday. What's Christmas without fireworks?

  2. We don't get fireworks at Christmas thank God. Never thought about vets with PTSD. It did occur to me, if you let off fireworks in your yard it might discourage the deer. Happy weekend, if you can.

    1. All the houses around here have wood siding. I could also set my house on fire.

  3. Well, I actually enjoy fireworks, but here in Texas we only get access to them twice a year. For two weeks around Christmas/New Year's and then about two weeks around the 4th of July. And no one is allowed to shoot them off inside of city limits.

    1. Come to Michigan. You can shoot them off anywhere except public property, though people total ignore that rule. All eleven major holidays are allowed, day before, day of, and day after. My son and girlfriend live in Austin and came up for the 4th last year. Said they would never come back for the holiday again. It was awful. No sleep for anyone. Just lots of loud noise. I am not talking about the 'bombs bursting in air' variety.

    2. I do sympathise. At least here they seem to stop at midnight, mostly. Not much after if at all.

  4. Funny as I am reading this my Wallace went behind the desk and is shaking with fear but he feels a little better with me near me. If I could I would ban these stupid fireworks. I never did think of PTSD but now I recall my mom being shaken up by them and she would sit with me and we would talk and she would get angry about it. It just occurred to me (in my foggy brain) that my mom must have suffered from this as well since she hated thunderstorms. I have seen little kids hold these fireworks and think of them getting hurt plus my house on fire. Hate it!!
