Most Hated Foods?

This morning was my monthly brunch get-together with old friends.  That meant I had time to only do a quick review of the news on the web.

First I learned that Ben Affleck had been kicked out of a casino for counting cards at blackjack.  So I guess no one with any sense should be playing the game and beating the house.  What I have never understood is how they know you are counting.  It's not like you make little marks on the table.  Geez, they should watch me play Hearts.  I always count cards.  In my head.  What are they?  Mind readers?  I think it is more if the customer is winning too much he is gone, baby, gone.

Next I hit upon a story about the ten most hated foods.  Somehow, kale did not end up on the list so I am guessing someone fudged the results.  But the top ten foods were:

10. Cilantro,  9. Licorice, 8. Mushrooms, 7. Mayonnaise, 6. Oysters, 5. Celery, 4. Tofu, 3. Cheese Fondue, 2. Garlic, and at number one Brussels Sprouts.

Well, right behind the dreaded kale, I would definitely put cilantro.  Apparently this is genetic and some folks only taste soap, not what ever it is supposed to taste like.  As a modern Mom I could threaten to wash my kids mouth out with cilantro.  Goodbye Lifebouy.

The only other item on the list that I hate is tofu.  I do not like food that fights back.  You bite into it and it springs back at you.  And it has no taste.  Put it in a salad with some cilantro and you have spongy-bob soap.  And I dislike black licorice as anise is not one of my favorite flavors.

I would have thought that broccoli would be at the top spot or at least on the list (guess they didn't ask President Bush  for input).  I will admit that I never tasted Brussels Sprouts until several years ago when we made them in a culinary class.  They are a vegetable that no one in my family ever made when I was growing up.  Ever since I started adding them to family dinners, my kids love them.  I have some great recipes over on Pinterest.

I love mushrooms and put garlic in almost everything I cook.  I use mayo judiciously, but more from a calorie issue than anything else.  I've had raw oysters and while I don't dislike them, there are other seafood choices I would make.

As for celery, I'll agree that it has almost no flavor, but it adds great crunch to salad.  And what is not to like about cheese, even if it is melted and wrapped around some great bread.

So, any foods you hate?  Surprised that something did not make the list?  Happy Eating.

  1. I only hate one food (that I have ever tasted) and that is squid although I ate it fried a bit like onion rings once and enjoyed it. I love oysters, eat lots of garlic, have eaten Brussels sprouts all my life. I am surprised you call celery tasteless, I love anise/licorice, in fact all the foods on my list. There are a number of foods in Asian countries or others which I have never tried and think I probably wouldn't enjoy, but as I have never had the chance to try them, I am not concerned. Oh and I like kale in soups.

    1. Not too fond of squid either. But it is not something that too many people cook with in general. I once invited someone to dinner and made a berry shortcake for dessert only to have them tell me they hated all berries.

    2. I always make a point of asking my dinner guests if there is anything they can't or won't eat - that must have been so frustrating.

    3. I was just thinking, you would like having us to dinner, Matt is a little bit picky, but basically we eat everything. And we appreciate what it took to produce the dishes we eat.

    4. My parents loved tripe. In England it used to be tripe and onions. The Portuguese eat tripe in all kinds of ways. I lied, I didn't enjoy tripe although when I told the Portuguese friends that I had only ever tried tripe and onions they said it sounded dreadful, so maybe if I had ever tried it in Portugal I would have enjoyed it. My German Shepherds loved raw, unbleached tripe.

  2. Hmmm... you're making me hungry! I don't think there's anything I won't eat, except maybe Thai green curry - there's something in it that sets my sinuses on fire and makes it feel like my nose is going to fall off, but apart from that I'll eat anything as long as someone else cooks it for me. :-)

  3. OK I am with you on licorice-yuck, Brussel Sprouts-Yuck but I find mom like them. My mom likes them-Yuck:) Love Mushrooms, Love Garlic. Tofu has not taste and so I do not see the point and celery-The strings get caught in my teeth and not overly flavourful so I never buy it. Love Calamari(squid)-yummy. I am surprised cheese is on this list. I dislike asparagus-another mom favourite-my mom too. Now I hate sausage-hate....I mean hate-hahahahaha. Gross-triple yuck. My mom used to eat Schmalz...that is German for bacon fat. She spread it on her rye bread and added salt. I had to collect it after the fat went white and place it in a container. One can buy it at a German Delicatessen. That is food that they must have eaten when they were starving and still think it tastes good. Now Haggis...That is food on a dare. Placing ground up intestines with other crap and adding spices to hide what it really is and placing it in a sheep's stomach is starvation food. They must have been drunk many moons ago and one said to the other "I dare ya to eat that?" Have a great Sunday

    1. Yes, there are certainly items that are eaten by certain cultures. My mother's Italian family loved tripe, otherwise known as cow's stomach. Man, you have to really be hungry. Funny you should mention sausage. I just dropped off a baked pasta and sausage casserole at my son's house.

  4. I can't say that I hate too many foods, but there are a few things I don't especially like to eat and some I never eat. Celery is one for me and I'm the person picking it out of salad. I don't usually eat beets -- I think they taste like dirt -- and don't do squid either. I don't eat any hot cereals or mushy stuffing. I think it's a textural issue for me. I sound pretty picky, but brussel sprouts are one of my favorite foods, and I love friend oysters.

    1. A lot of taste issues are textural, I believe. I love crunchy things and even put nuts in some pasta dishes. My daughter-in-law hates nuts in anything. So, for her, I put them on the side and let everyone help themselves. And I think beets are an acquired taste. I happen to like them, my kids not so much.
