E is for the Eagle's Nest

First, I must thank our guide who arranged this 'not on the agenda' trip to the Eagle's Nest high in the German Alps.  It was a very cold morning when we left Munich to drive up into the mountains.  The retreat was a gift to Adolph Hitler for his 50th birthday.  They say he was afraid of heights which makes you wonder about the mindset of the guys who built it for him.  It was incredibly beautiful and not at all as cool weather-wise as it was down below.
This was day 17.

On the road to the Eagle's Nest we passed the Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Saviour in Wies, Bavaria. The church is a UNESCO World Heritage site and I will be pointing others out as we travel along.  Just wish we had time to stop and see the interior, but the Alps were calling.

Above the clouds on the road up:

At the top of the road:

A long walk through a tunnel  in the mountain will take us to an elevator to the top.

On the terrace:

A room for Eva Braun:

And a dining room where I had my lunch because it was too hot outside on the patio in the blazing sun.  The wood-working was just beautiful.

The hill behind the outdoor patio and the view from the hill:

And from the path down to the edge:

On my Bucket List:  Egypt

  1. I love being above the clouds though I'm sure the view on a clear day would be amazing from here. Thanks for introducing me to the Eagle's Nest!

    1. I think it would be much scarier if you didn't like heights and could see all the way down. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I was going to say that maybe Hitler was OK with the height because of the clouds. What a super trip and I too would love to have seen the church. What was lunch like?

  3. When I was 8, my mom, my brother and I went to Europe. I loved it! We went to the Eagle's nest but it was a rainy/sleet day(Oct) and we couldn't go all the way to the top which was a shame. My mom has these little postcards of how his place looked like before the U.S. bombed it-neat to have this

    1. Kinda glad there were clouds. Made it seem very eerie. It is amazing that they have rebuilt so much that was bombed. Detroit is falling apart and nobody fixes or rebuilds anything. And hey, they never were bombed!
